Perhaps he too was more affected by the traditions of the Tawaif than he would have ever cared to admit. The Music Victoria Awards are back for 2021 to celebrate the Victorian music communities huge achievements this year, despite facing one of their toughest times in history.Īs an event that sees the Victorian music industry celebrate the state’s outstanding achievements and best new releases, performers, venues and festivals, The Awards is one of the most anticipated music industry events on the Melbourne Music Week calendar. However, if you read his autobiography carefully you will discover he was a tad lascivious throughout his life and career. He probably transferred much of that musical tradition to the young Shankar.ĭuring the second half of his career, Ravi Shankar presented himself as a devout Hindu representative of an ancient and somewhat ascetic musical tradition. Ravi Shankar’s guru, Baba Allaudin Khan, was once the chief musician of a princely court and no doubt lived within the musical landscape of the court and the Tawaif. As 20th-century Indian authorities were turning against the Tawaif, young Hindu musicians were adopting much of their repertoire, changing and modifying it, while at the same time indigenous scholars (given that Indian music is orally transmitted) were rewriting the history of Indian classical music so that Ravi Shankar would later feel no compunction about introducing his music as a Hindu spiritual tradition going back centuries. Yet while the Tawaif were being chased off the musical scene, many young middle-class Hindus were taking up some of the instruments and musical traditions of the Tawaif in music schools and conservatories that were sprouting up. As they became the founding fathers of modern India after independence, these English-speaking Hindus created laws that treated Tawaif as prostitutes and all but wiped them out as a social and artistic force. In turn the English-speaking Hindu nationalists saw the Tawaif as a sexually corrupt cultural expression of the old Muslim principalities and, imitating the British, declared them to be immoral. They invited Christian evangelicals to set up English language schools for the Hindu middle classes and went to war against the Tawaif. After the 1857 Indian uprising against the British, the British rulers of India adopted a new cultural policy.

There are few Tawaif left in India and most of them try and stay out of the limelight. Upon his death she took up his duties and eventually became the ruler of the principality of Sardhana, a position she maintained until her death in 1836. Tawaif, like pop stars today, often “married up.” For example, Begum Samru started out as a young Tawaif and then became the partner of a European mercenary.
